“If I was to buy any sports car that wasn't a Mercedes, it'd be a Porsche 911,” says Mercedes' head of design, Gorden Wagener. “But when you see the two cars together, we think ours has the edge.”
He's talking about the new Mercedes-AMG GT, a front-mid engined, two-seater sports car that's unashamedly aimed at higher-end 911s, and we've come to see it at Mercedes' Sindelfingen studio.
The GT replaces the larger SLS, and is seen by Wagener as the best example yet of his 'sensual purity' design philosophy: “The SLS is very much [he gestures] line, line with a surface in between. With the GT we started with the surface and worked to refine and reduce the number of lines.”
Elements of the SLS's platform have been carried over, so the GT measures the same 1,939mm wide.
Fiat surprised the Geneva audience with a Zagato-bodied variation on the familiar new 500 theme.
Fiat 500 Coupe Zagato: an Italian Mini Coupe rival
With Mini branching out in all different directions and Citroen growing its DS brand, it was perhaps inevitable that Fiat would try new things with the 500. It looks strikingly different at first sight, but the Coupe Zagato is based on the existing 500 platform. The differences mainly concern a modified lower roofline, bearing the traditional Zagato double-hump roof contours and rear window/C-pillar treatment.
The standard 500 interior has been retrimmed in black and yellow leather to match the ‘Pop Yellow’ exterior hue.
The new Kia Soul EV will be on sale in UK by end of 2014
We knew there would be a Kia Soul EV by 2014, but we didn’t know whether Kia UK would offer it in the UK. But they will. Yaser Shabsogh, Kia’s UK Commercial Director, has confirmed that the electric Soul will be offered in the UK, but not until the end of 2014, some months after the arrival of the new Soul in early 2014.
